Operating on hydrogen fuel cells, the train will produce only water vapor, ensuring zero carbon emissions and minimal noise pollution. The project is aligned with the 'Hydrogen for Railways' program, striving to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. The government has allocated Rs 2,800 crore for the development of 35 hydrogen-powered trains and essential infrastructure. Looking ahead, Indian Railways plans to expand the initiative with the 'Hydrogen for Heritage' project, introducing 35 hydrogen trains on picturesque heritage and hill routes like the Matheran Hill Railway and Nilgiri Mountain Railway. Each train will cost around Rs 80 crore, with an additional Rs 70 crore designated for hydrogen infrastructure on these routes.
