Indian Railways is on course to introduce the first hydrogen-powered train in the country, scheduled to operate on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana by March 31, 2025, spanning 89 km. This innovative train will feature a 1,200 HP hydrogen fuel engine, surpassing the power and efficiency of similar trains in Germany and China. With a capacity for over 2,500 passengers across eight coaches, the train will reach speeds of 110 km/h, offering a powerful and eco-friendly mode of transport. By running on hydrogen fuel cells, the train will produce only water vapor, ensuring zero emissions and noise pollution, a significant step towards a cleaner and quieter railway network. The project is in line with Indian Railways' ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, with a substantial investment of Rs 2,800 crore allocated for developing hydrogen-powered trains and essential infrastructure. The 'Hydrogen for Heritage' expansion plan will extend the use of hydrogen trains to picturesque routes like Matheran, Darjeeling, and more, promoting sustainability and green technology. This initiative places India among the global leaders in adopting hydrogen-powered trains, emphasizing the nation's commitment to clean energy and environmentally friendly transport solutions, and marks a considerable stride towards a greener and more sustainable future for Indian Railways.
