Ferrovie della Calabria in Italy has commissioned Stadler to produce three unique 950mm gauge diesel-electric multiple-units. These trains will be crafted at Stadler's Bussnang plant and are designated for service on the Cosenza – Catanzaro route starting in 2027. Stadler's successful track record in Italy includes the sale of more than 100 tailor-made trains, among which are nine hydrogen-powered trainsets ordered by FdC. The projects undertaken by Stadler cater to operators' diverse needs, incorporating technologies like diesel-electric, battery, and hydrogen power, as well as features like light axleloads, small profiles to fit tunnels, and rack and pinion drives. Maurizio Oberti, Stadler's Marketing & Sales Director for Italy, highlighted the complexity of these projects, emphasizing the need for close collaboration with customers and specialized expertise.
