The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan have outlined ambitious goals for the country to increase its hydrogen production and consumption. The government targets producing 0.5mn to 1.9mn tonnes of hydrogen annually by 2060, with a focus on export opportunities to serve as a green energy corridor between Europe and Asia. To achieve these targets, Azerbaijan plans to enhance its renewable energy capacity to 30% of total installed capacity by 2030, utilizing offshore wind, solar energy projects, and electrolysis technology. However, the country faces challenges in scaling up hydrogen production, including the need to establish carbon capture and storage solutions for blue hydrogen and address water resource management issues. Infrastructure investments are crucial, with discussions ongoing about the construction of a dedicated hydrogen pipeline since the existing infrastructure is unsuitable for hydrogen transport. Azerbaijan is actively seeking foreign investments and partnerships with international energy companies like Masdar, ACWA Power, and Fortescue Future Industries (FFI). The government is implementing policy reforms, offering tax exemptions, and financial support mechanisms to attract investors and promote hydrogen production. Azerbaijan's hydrogen strategy aligns with its broader vision of becoming a regional clean energy hub. By capitalizing on its renewable resources, existing energy infrastructure, and favorable geographic location, Azerbaijan aims to establish itself as a prominent exporter of clean hydrogen.
