The European Union has announced two major grants totaling R628m (€32m) to boost South Africa's green hydrogen agenda. The first grant of R490m (€25m) aims to stimulate investments in green hydrogen infrastructure, attracting additional finance of up to R10bn. This funding will cover various aspects of the hydrogen value chain and is expected to enhance the sector, reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, promote economic growth, and create job opportunities. Additionally, the EU's investment will help develop a regional green hydrogen hub in Southern Africa. The second grant of R138m (€7m) will assist Transnet in its green hydrogen transformation, supporting the company's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. This funding will be used for studies, pilot projects, and technical assistance related to low-carbon hydrogen production and storage, ultimately shaping Transnet's green hydrogen strategy. The EU's Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting its importance in accelerating the green transition, promoting sustainable development, and creating new economic opportunities. The grants mark a significant milestone in the partnership between the EU and South Africa, emphasizing the commitment to driving the sustainability agenda and fostering green initiatives in the region.
