GAIL's Green Hydrogen Initiative with Accelera by Cummins in India
Key Ideas
- GAIL (India) Limited and Accelera by Cummins have signed an MoU to collaborate on hydrogen and energy transition technologies in India, focusing on production, blending, transportation, and storage.
- GAIL has commissioned a 10 MW green hydrogen unit in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, using an electrolyser from Accelera by Cummins, showcasing its commitment to clean energy initiatives.
- The partnership aims to advance hydrogen application across various sectors such as transport, power, and steel, exploring its use as a mono-fuel or in blends with LNG, CNG, and natural gas.
- In addition to hydrogen projects, GAIL is also working on setting up compressed biogas plants, grain-based ethanol plants, and synthetic natural gas production facilities as part of its clean energy expansion.
GAIL (India) Limited, a prominent natural gas company, has joined hands with Accelera by Cummins to advance hydrogen and energy transition technologies in India. The collaboration, marked by a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed at India Energy Week 2025, aims to leverage GAIL's natural gas infrastructure and Accelera's expertise in clean energy solutions. GAIL has accelerated its net-zero targets from 2040 to 2035 and has already commissioned a 10 MW green hydrogen unit at its Vijaipur plant in Madhya Pradesh using Accelera's electrolyser.
The partnership intends to explore opportunities in hydrogen production, blending, transportation, and storage, and aims to expand hydrogen usage in transport, power, steel sectors, and as a fuel source or blend with other gases. Additionally, GAIL is actively involved in various clean energy initiatives beyond hydrogen, including setting up compressed biogas (CBG) plants, grain-based ethanol facilities, and synthetic natural gas production.
Cummins Inc., known for its sustainability and energy transition solutions, will play a crucial role in facilitating the application of hydrogen across multiple sectors through this collaboration. The agreement between GAIL and Accelera signifies a significant step towards transitioning to cleaner energy sources and developing infrastructure for sustainable energy production and utilization in India.
