Vast amounts of renewable energy are required to produce green hydrogen, a clean energy source that can potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly by substituting fossil fuels in energy-intensive sectors. The Hydrogen Council has reported massive investments of US$320 billion in 1,400 green hydrogen projects worldwide. European countries are looking to import green hydrogen from sunny and windy regions like Chile and South Africa, with plans to establish extensive green hydrogen pipelines across the continent. Both Chile and South Africa view green hydrogen as a means to decarbonize heavy industries and mining sectors, but they face financial challenges in setting up the necessary infrastructure. De-risking measures, such as state guarantees and low-interest credit, are proposed to attract private investors. However, tax incentives and credits may not be sufficient to address fundamental economic and political uncertainties. The two countries are urged to create a favorable business environment for foreign investment and local participation in green hydrogen projects. Chile and South Africa have introduced strategies and funding programs to promote the green hydrogen industry, focusing on market opportunities, workforce training, and ambitious production targets. The need for international collaboration and financial caution is emphasized to ensure sustainable growth and avoid excessive liabilities in the development of green hydrogen industries.
