Indian Railways has embarked on a groundbreaking project to develop India's first hydrogen train, as disclosed by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a recent statement to the Rajya Sabha. This initiative involves fitting a hydrogen fuel cell onto a diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) rake, with specifications crafted by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO). The hydrogen train is projected to be one of the world's longest and most powerful in its class. Alongside the train development, plans include establishing on-ground infrastructure for hydrogen refilling, encompassing hydrogen production, storage, and dispensation facilities. The project has received safety approvals from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO), certifying the layout's adherence to safety standards. This endeavor underscores Indian Railways' commitment to advancing alternative energy sources in the transportation sector, promoting a cleaner and greener future.
