- The project, a first in the MENA region, demonstrates the feasibility of decarbonizing the steel manufacturing sector.
- The demo facility at Emsteel's site in Abu Dhabi replaces natural gas with certified green hydrogen to extract iron from iron ore, contributing to emissions reduction.
- The initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi’s Low Carbon Hydrogen Policy and the UAE’s National Hydrogen Strategy to establish the country as a key global producer of low-carbon hydrogen by 2031.
Masdar and Emsteel, based in the UAE, have completed a groundbreaking pilot project to produce green steel using green hydrogen at Emsteel’s site in Abu Dhabi. This initiative, a first in the Middle East and North Africa region, aims to decarbonize the steel manufacturing sector. By utilizing certified green hydrogen to extract iron from iron ore instead of natural gas, the project significantly reduces emissions associated with traditional steel production processes. The green hydrogen used in the project is certified by Avance Labs under the International Tracking Standard Foundation. Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, emphasized the importance of green hydrogen in advancing national and global decarbonization efforts. The project is in line with Abu Dhabi’s Low Carbon Hydrogen Policy and the UAE’s National Hydrogen Strategy, which seeks to position the UAE as a prominent global producer of low-carbon hydrogen by 2031.
