Morocco's Green Ammonia Projects: Pioneering Sustainability in North Africa
Key Ideas
  • Worley Ltd is set to begin work on two major green ammonia projects in Morocco with a focus on sustainability and renewable energy.
  • The projects, including the $7bn Moroccan Ammonia Project and Tarfaya Power-to-X project, aim to boost production capacity while aligning with global shifts towards greener energy solutions.
  • The initiatives, developed in cooperation with OCP Group, involve the construction of transmission grids, hydrogen and ammonia plants, and storage facilities powered by wind and solar energy.
  • Morocco's commitment to environmental sustainability and renewable energy is further exemplified by upcoming projects like the Offshore Wind-farm and collaborations for green energy bridges with international firms.
Worley Ltd, an Australian energy services provider, is gearing up to work on two significant green ammonia projects in Morocco in collaboration with OCP Group. The projects, set to commence by the end of 2024, include the $7bn Moroccan Ammonia Project and the Tarfaya Power-to-X project. The latter, located in southern Morocco, encompasses various facilities powered by renewable sources such as wind and solar energy, aiming to support the production of green ammonia and hydrogen. The Moroccan Ammonia Project will cover a vast area and include battery storage, wind and solar power plants, hydrogen, and ammonia production units. Its goal is to scale up annual production to three million tonnes by 2032, serving the purpose of creating green fertilizers. The Jorf Hydrogen Project (JH2P) is another initiative being launched, focusing on green ammonia production with a capacity of 100,000 tonnes annually. These projects, developed by the joint venture JESA, are part of OCP Group's green growth initiative involving a substantial investment toward sustainability and carbon neutrality by 2040. Morocco's strategic vision aligns with long-term goals of becoming carbon neutral by 2040, positioning itself as a front runner in renewable energy in North Africa. Collaborations with international firms like Jan De Nul and Fortescue to build green energy bridges and offshore wind-farms further strengthen the country's commitment to environmental sustainability. These partnerships and projects not only boost Morocco's energy independence but also pave the way for a greener and more sustainable future in the region.
