Namibia and South Africa have taken a significant step towards transforming the energy landscape of southern Africa by signing an agreement to explore the creation of a green hydrogen corridor. The agreement, signed during the World Hydrogen Summit in May 2024, aims to investigate the feasibility of constructing a cross-border green hydrogen pipeline. This ambitious project involves key entities such as the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme, Gasunie Waterstof Holding B.V., and Climate Fund Managers, among others. The study, with a budget of N$4.9 billion, will cover various aspects including technological, commercial, financial, legal, and environmental factors to ensure compliance with ESG requirements. The initial focus of the project will be on connecting Lüderitz, Namibia, and the Northern Cape, South Africa, with plans for future expansions to the Western Cape and the Erongo region. If successful, this pipeline could become Africa's first intra-country hydrogen backbone, facilitating trade and contributing to sustainable development in the region. The project is viewed as a crucial step towards realizing the Africa Continental Free Trade Area and Agenda 2063, with the potential to advance green hydrogen technology and drive industrialization in the area.
