President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia officially opened the HyIron Oshivela Green Hydrogen Plant near Arandis in the Erongo Region, marking it as the first facility in Southern Africa to utilize green hydrogen in iron ore processing for direct reduced iron (DRI) production. Emphasizing the importance of this initiative, the President highlighted its role in achieving zero-emission iron production and its alignment with Namibia's focus on value addition and industrialization. The project received funding from various sources, including grants from the German government, and has already secured a commercial off-take agreement with a prominent German automotive parts manufacturer, Benteler.
