Caterpillar has introduced the Cat CG260 gas generator sets as part of its commercial power solutions, now approved for operating with up to 25% hydrogen gas. These 12- and 16-cylinder variants are designed to deliver up to 4.5 MW of electric power, catering to various power requirements. Retrofit kits have been made available for upgrading existing gen sets like CG132B, CG170B, CG260, and G3500H to utilize hydrogen fuel mix, expanding the sustainable energy options. Caterpillar's move aligns with the growing demand for lower carbon power solutions, as stated by Melissa Busen, the vice president for Caterpillar Large Electric Power. Furthermore, the company has demonstrated its commitment to hydrogen technology with the availability of the Cat G3516 gas gen sets capable of running on 100% hydrogen. This offering, along with the recent collaboration with Microsoft and Ballard Power Systems, where a 1.5 MW hydrogen fuel cell was used for backup power at a data center, highlights Caterpillar's strides in promoting sustainable energy generation.
