China has emerged as a frontrunner in low-emission hydrogen production, securing a significant share of new projects globally. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), China leads the sector's manufacturing with expertise in producing electrolysers. These devices, crucial for generating low-emission hydrogen from renewable or nuclear electricity, are pivotal in the transition to cleaner energy sources. The IEA report highlights that of the 6.5GW of electrolyser capacity approved in the past year, China accounted for over 40%, showcasing its dominance in the industry. Furthermore, China's manufacturing capacity for electrolysers stands at 60% of the global total, producing a remarkable 25GW annually, surpassing the average deployment rate worldwide. This reflects the country's commitment to clean energy technologies and signifies a significant milestone in the global shift towards sustainable practices. In contrast, Europe witnessed a fourfold increase in electrolyser capacity during the same period, underlining a broader trend of growth in hydrogen technologies. India also made strides in this sector, reaching a capacity of 1.3GW. These developments indicate a promising outlook for low-emission hydrogen on a global scale. Moreover, the report notes that several prominent Chinese solar panel manufacturers have diversified into electrolyser production.
