In 2024, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) made significant investments in Uzbekistan, signing 34 projects totaling €938 million. This marked a record investment for the country, with a majority focused on green economy projects. Notably, the EBRD supported the first renewable hydrogen facility in Central Asia, aiding in the decarbonisation of the fertiliser production sector. Additionally, investments were made in a 200 MW solar photovoltaic power plant, a battery energy storage system, grid infrastructure, and road rehabilitation projects. The EBRD also provided financial support to the National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan for a new transmission line, aiming to enhance grid efficiency and integrate renewables. Furthermore, the EBRD engaged in the development of sustainable transport connections through a significant loan for road rehabilitation and bridge construction. The investment also targeted the financial sector, offering credit lines and loans to local institutions, with a focus on supporting small and medium-sized businesses, including those led by women and youth. Additionally, the EBRD collaborated with the Uzbek government on the privatisation of a state-owned lender and launched advisory projects for small businesses, particularly in rural areas and with women entrepreneurs. The EBRD's involvement also extended to policy dialogue with national authorities to facilitate key legal acts related to privatisation, the electricity market, and subsoil use, showcasing a holistic approach to developmental initiatives in Uzbekistan.
