Mitsubishi Corporation (MC), Takasago Thermal Engineering Co., Ltd. (TTE), Hokkaido Electric Power Company (HEPCO), and Air Water Hokkaido Inc. (AWH) have signed a joint development agreement to discuss the provision of green hydrogen in Hokkaido's Chitose area. This collaboration aligns with Japan's focus on hydrogen as a key element in realizing carbon neutrality. The Japanese government updated its Basic Hydrogen Strategy in June 2023 to emphasize the importance of establishing a domestic hydrogen supply chain. Industries are increasingly looking at hydrogen as a next-generation fuel and raw material. Chitose, home to New Chitose Airport and upcoming semiconductor plants, is strategically positioned to benefit from green hydrogen for decarbonization. The 'Zero Carbon City Chitose' agenda outlines plans for green hydrogen production for local consumption to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. A feasibility study for green hydrogen supply in Chitose City was approved for a subsidy by Japan's Agency for Natural Resources and Energy. The aim is to establish a hydrogen cluster by 2030 and develop a green hydrogen supply chain in the wider Chitose area. With the support of Hokkaido Prefecture, Chitose City, and other stakeholders, the project aims to contribute to a sustainable and prosperous society.
