Sarawak, Malaysia, is embarking on a significant green hydrogen production initiative, utilizing its abundant hydropower resources to cater to the increasing demand for clean fuel in Asia. The partnership with Japan, South Korea, and China has expanded Sarawak’s hydrogen supply chain, aiming to establish a prominent position in the Asia-Pacific green hydrogen economy. Additionally, the integration of Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) is set to unlock new low-carbon economic opportunities for the state. The Sarawak government, under the leadership of Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, is actively working towards enhancing the state's electricity generation capacity to 10GW by 2030 and further to 15GW by 2035. This strategic move is intended to solidify Sarawak's status as a key player in green energy within the Asean region, supporting industries, promoting green technologies, and facilitating regional electricity exports. Furthermore, Sarawak's vision includes becoming the primary clean energy supplier in Asean, emphasizing the importance of cross-border interconnectivity through initiatives like the Asean Power Grid. By prioritizing regional energy security and exploring storage solutions, Sarawak aims to optimize energy supply and distribution in the region. The state’s commitment to sustainable development is evident through the implementation of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which outlines Sarawak's path towards prosperity, inclusivity, and environmental sustainability. Noteworthy achievements include exceeding the World Bank's high-income threshold earlier than projected, reinforcing Sarawak’s reputation as an economic center for trade and investment. Moreover, Sarawak has introduced progressive policy reforms such as the Land (Carbon Storage) Rules 2022 and the Natural Resources and Environment Ordinance 2024 to bolster resource governance and industrial decarbonization. These efforts reflect Sarawak's proactive approach towards realizing a green, innovative, and sustainable future.
