Air Liquide has secured a 110 million euro grant from the European Innovation Fund for its ENHANCE project in the port of Antwerp-Bruges, Belgium, focusing on the production and distribution of low-carbon and renewable hydrogen derived from ammonia. The project will involve building a large-scale renewable ammonia cracking plant and an innovative hydrogen liquefier, marking the first industrial-scale initiative of its kind in Europe. By utilizing renewable ammonia as a feedstock instead of natural gas, the project aims to significantly reduce CO2 emissions by more than 300,000 tonnes annually. Through this project, Air Liquide plans to retrofit an existing hydrogen production unit in Antwerp-Bruges and construct a hydrogen liquefier to facilitate the development of a low-carbon and renewable hydrogen supply chain in Europe. This initiative is crucial for the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors such as refineries, chemicals, and various modes of transportation like road, maritime, and aviation. The use of ammonia, produced with a low-carbon footprint, allows for sustainable hydrogen production in regions with abundant renewable energy sources.
