Altech Batteries Signs Major Energy Storage Deal in Germany
Key Ideas
  • Altech Batteries has signed an offtake agreement with RefLau for up to 158MWh of CERENERGY GridPack energy storage capacity, indicating a growing demand for innovative energy solutions.
  • The deal with RefLau paves the way for Altech to enter the hydrogen business segment, utilizing their sodium-chloride solid-state batteries where traditional lithium-ion batteries are not feasible.
  • RefLau's green hydrogen pilot project aims to develop a reference plant powered solely by renewable energy, with the goal of mitigating supply gaps from solar and wind intermittency using battery storage solutions.
  • The collaboration between Altech Batteries and RefLau not only promotes sustainable energy practices but also sets a precedent for scalable and reliable energy storage systems in Europe.
Altech Batteries, specifically its CERENERGY GridPack energy storage capacity, has made significant strides in the energy sector by signing an offtake letter of intent with Referenzkraftwerk Lausitz GmbH (RefLau) in Germany. The agreement entails RefLau purchasing 30MWh of storage in the first year, followed by 32MWh annually for four years from Altech's planned sodium-chloride solid-state battery plant. Additionally, RefLau plans to acquire 10MWh of batteries for its own plant in Schwarze Pumpe Industrial Park. This deal marks the second offtake agreement for CERENERGY batteries this year, highlighting the increasing demand for innovative energy storage solutions. Altech's CEO, Iggy Tan, sees this as a positive indication of industries transitioning towards renewable energy. The partnership with RefLau also opens doors for Altech to venture into the hydrogen business segment, offering scalable and reliable battery systems. RefLau's green hydrogen pilot project, a joint venture between Enertrag SE and Energiequelle GmbH, aims to create a reference plant powered entirely by renewable energy to address supply gaps from solar and wind intermittency. The collaboration includes the deployment of 32 Altech Cerenergy 1MWh GridPacks in a hybrid power island, showcasing a standardized solution for decentralised energy solutions in Europe.
