German transmission system operator Bayernets has announced a significant investment of €210 million in hydrogen pipelines in Southern Germany. The company's project focuses on the construction of a new 40.5-kilometer gas pipeline named AUGUSTA, intended to support future hydrogen transportation. This initiative is a collaborative effort, with funding provided by KfW IPEX-Bank, Commerzbank, and DZ Bank. The AUGUSTA pipeline is set to comply with the necessary standards for hydrogen transportation right from the start, ensuring its viability for the medium and long term. Additionally, AUGUSTA is strategically planned to link with the SoutH2 Corridor, a hydrogen pipeline project recognized as a Project of Common Interest by the European Union. Andreas Ufer, a Member of KfW IPEX-Bank's Management Board, highlighted the significance of the AUGUSTA pipeline in securing energy supply in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, emphasizing its role in facilitating hydrogen transportation. By 2030, AUGUSTA is expected to become operational, acting as a crucial channel for transporting green hydrogen sourced from North Africa, particularly Algeria and Tunisia, to the Austrian-German border at Burghausen. At this juncture, the pipeline will integrate with Germany's HyPipe Bavaria network to further distribute the hydrogen for various energy applications.
