The Czech Ministry of the Environment has announced a significant investment of 15 billion Czech Koruna to support the greening of rail transport. This initiative aims to replace outdated passenger trains with modern, environmentally friendly alternatives. The investment support is designed to facilitate the replacement of old diesel-powered trains with newer models that feature advanced propulsion systems. These new trains can be powered by overhead lines, electric traction and batteries, or hydrogen-powered sets. There is also an option to replace old electric vehicles with newer ones. The Minister of the Environment, Petr Hladík, emphasized the importance of this investment in providing a more comfortable and eco-friendly travel experience for passengers while reducing environmental impact. The support offered includes up to 70% funding for replacing diesel-powered rolling stock and 40% support for upgrading older electric vehicles. Additionally, a portion of the funding will soon be allocated for the modernization of urban public transport. The focus of the investment is on enhancing energy efficiency, achieving energy savings, and lowering CO2 emissions. Minister Hladík highlighted the significance of transitioning to zero-emission propulsion in trains to promote cleaner air. Minister of Transport Martin Kupka echoed this sentiment by emphasizing the need for modern, customer-friendly, and environmentally conscious rail transport to meet the changing demands of passengers. The investment program will be carried out in two rounds, with the first round evaluating project proposals based on cost-effectiveness and energy demands. Successful applicants will advance to the second round to apply for continued support. The initiative is open to regions and public service contractors, with the aim of promoting sustainable and efficient public transport solutions. This investment marks the first step in the public transport modernization plan under the TRANSGov program, signaling a commitment to a greener and more sustainable future for rail transport in the Czech Republic.
