EET Hydrogen Power Plant to Revolutionize UK's Energy Landscape
Key Ideas
- EET will construct Europe's first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant at its Stanlow refinery by 2027, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 740,000 tonnes annually.
- The plant, with a capacity of 125 MW, aims to cut total emissions by 95% at the Stanlow refinery, positioning it as the world's lowest carbon refinery by 2030.
- The investment is part of EET's $3 billion energy transition initiatives in England, supporting its goal to be the leading low carbon hydrogen producer in the UK.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) has announced the development of EET Hydrogen Power, Europe's pioneering hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant at its Stanlow refinery in the UK, set to be operational by 2027. This innovative project, to be executed in two phases, will have a power capacity of 125 MW and provide 6,000 tonnes per day of steam. By replacing hydrocarbons with hydrogen, the plant will significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 740,000 tonnes annually, contributing to EET Fuels' goal of slashing total emissions by 95% at the Stanlow refinery, aiming to become the world's lowest carbon refinery by 2030. The investment in this venture is a vital component of EET's comprehensive $3 billion energy transition initiatives in the northwest of England, aligning with its vision to be the premier low carbon hydrogen producer in the UK. EET Hydrogen Power will not only supply low carbon power to industrial users in the area to facilitate their decarbonisation objectives but also establish itself as a separate vertical under EET. Tony Fountain, the managing partner of Essar Energy Transition, emphasized the strategic importance of EET Hydrogen Power in advancing the UK towards low carbon energy leadership. Rob Wallace, CEO of EET Hydrogen Power, highlighted the project's significance in transforming Stanlow into a pivotal low carbon transition hub within the HyNet Industrial Cluster, ultimately aiding in regional emissions reduction targets. This initiative exemplifies EET's dedication to championing decarbonization in vital industries and pioneering sustainable energy solutions.
