EET to Build Europe's First Hydrogen-Ready CHP Plant in UK
Key Ideas
  • Essar Energy Transition (EET) will construct Europe's inaugural hydrogen-ready CHP plant at Stanlow refinery in the UK by 2027, reducing CO2 emissions by 740,000 tonnes yearly.
  • The EET Hydrogen Power project, with a capacity of 125 MW power and 6,000 tonnes of steam daily, aims to replace hydrocarbons with hydrogen for a 95% emissions cut by 2030.
  • The $3 billion investment by EET in this plant will not only benefit Stanlow but also provide low-carbon power to industrial users in the region, aiding in their decarbonization efforts.
  • EET Hydrogen Power, a part of EET's broader energy transition strategy in northwest England, plans to operate independently within the organization and contribute to regional emission reduction targets.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) made an announcement to build Europe's premier hydrogen-ready combined heat and power (CHP) plant at Stanlow refinery in the UK by 2027. Named EET Hydrogen Power, this project is set to be developed in two phases, with the ultimate goal of reaching a capacity of 125 MW of power and 6,000 tonnes of steam per day. The primary objective of this initiative is to significantly lower carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 740,000 tonnes annually through the substitution of hydrocarbons with hydrogen. The new plant will replace the existing boiler units at Stanlow, responsible for generating almost 50 MW of power for the refinery's operations. By investing $3 billion in this hydrogen-ready power plant, EET aims to play a pivotal role in its plan to reduce emissions by 95% by 2030, with the vision of Stanlow becoming the world's least carbon-intensive refinery. Furthermore, this substantial investment will not only benefit Stanlow but also extend low-carbon power to other industrial users in the vicinity, assisting them in achieving their decarbonization objectives. Operating as a distinct vertical under EET, EET Hydrogen Power will be an innovative gas-turbine plant entirely ready for hydrogen in Europe, using low-carbon hydrogen from EET Hydrogen to contribute to the regional emission reduction goals. Rob Wallace, CEO of EET Hydrogen Power, emphasized the aim to transform Stanlow into a low carbon transition hub, showcasing a commitment to regional emission reduction targets and positioning the UK at the forefront of low carbon energy.
