  • Schemes to support production of 112,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen in Austria and 13,000 tonnes in Lithuania, reducing CO2 emissions significantly.
  • Subsidy will be awarded through competitive bidding process by the first quarter of 2025, benefiting companies constructing new electrolysers.
  • Direct grants per kilogram of renewable hydrogen produced to be given for a maximum of ten years to aid in the transition to clean energy.
The European Commission has given its approval for state aid schemes in Austria and Lithuania to support the production of renewable hydrogen. The 400 million euro Austrian scheme and 36 million euro Lithuanian scheme aim to produce 112,000 tonnes and 13,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen, respectively. This production will lead to a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to avoiding up to 536,000 tonnes and 61,000 tonnes of CO2 in Austria and Lithuania, respectively. The support will be provided through a competitive bidding process scheduled to conclude by the first quarter of 2025. Companies in Austria and Lithuania intending to build new electrolysers can participate and receive direct grants per kilogram of renewable hydrogen produced. These grants will continue for a maximum of ten years, encouraging the shift towards cleaner energy sources and playing a crucial role in the European Hydrogen Bank's 'Auctions-as-a-Service' tool.
