European-North African Collaboration Strengthens With Southern Hydrogen Corridor Project
Key Ideas
  • A Joint Declaration of Intent was signed by representatives of Germany, Algeria, Italy, Austria, and Tunisia in Rome to enhance collaboration on the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project.
  • The initiative aims to establish a direct pipeline connection for gaseous hydrogen between North Africa, Italy, Austria, and Germany, facilitating the transport of up to 163TWh of green hydrogen annually to Europe.
  • German companies are set to play a key role in supporting Algeria and Tunisia in diversifying their economies, advancing hydrogen deployment, and creating new jobs through various hydrogen projects.
  • Tunisia and Algeria have already made significant progress in hydrogen projects, with agreements in place for the development of hydrogen production projects and partnerships with European countries.
Representatives from Germany, Algeria, Italy, Austria, and Tunisia gathered in Rome to sign a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDoI) to enhance collaboration on the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project. This initiative aims to establish a direct pipeline connection for gaseous hydrogen between North Africa and key European countries, including Italy, Austria, and Germany. The project consists of five sub-projects and spans approximately 3,500-4,000km. The transmission system operators (TSOs) are currently in the planning phase, with the European segment expected to be 3,250km long, utilizing a significant portion of repurposed natural gas pipelines. This infrastructure will enable the transport of up to 163TWh of green hydrogen annually to Europe, contributing to the region's renewable energy goals. Dr. Philip Nimmermann, State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), emphasized the Southern Hydrogen Corridor as a groundbreaking renewable energy project with the potential to leverage North Africa's vast renewable energy resources. He highlighted the project's significance in advancing hydrogen deployment in Germany and supporting the EU's climate objectives. Moreover, the Southern Hydrogen Corridor holds promise for economic development in Tunisia and Algeria. Tunisia has already signed agreements for hydrogen projects, while Algeria is set to develop a major hydrogen production project in collaboration with companies from Austria, Germany, and Italy. These initiatives aim to diversify the economies of these North African countries, future-proof industries, and create employment opportunities. The Southern Hydrogen Corridor project signifies a strategic partnership between Europe and North Africa, with a focus on renewable energy and hydrogen infrastructure development. The commitment to this initiative underscores the potential for cross-border collaboration in advancing sustainable energy solutions and achieving climate targets.
