Key Ideas
- Gasgrid and international partners secure EU funding for three hydrogen transport projects in the Baltic region.
- Projects aim to create hydrogen infrastructure connecting markets in Finland, Baltic countries, and Central Europe.
- EU support totaling EUR 51.4 million granted for project follow-up studies, emphasizing decarbonization and clean energy goals.
- Gasgrid emphasizes the strategic importance of the Baltic region for hydrogen development and commitment to promoting the hydrogen economy.
Gasgrid and its international partners have successfully secured support from the European Union's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for three hydrogen transport projects in the Baltic region. The projects include the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor (NBHC), the Nordic Hydrogen Route (NHR), and the Baltic Sea Hydrogen Collector (BHC). These initiatives focus on developing hydrogen infrastructure to connect markets in Finland, Baltic countries, and Central Europe, fostering investment in clean electricity and hydrogen processing plants. With a total of EUR 51.4 million granted for project follow-up studies, the European Commission recognizes the projects' contributions to decarbonization and meeting EU climate and energy targets. Gasgrid's Senior Vice President, Sara Kärki, highlights the significance of this funding for Finland and the Baltic Sea Region, emphasizing the strategic role of the region in the European hydrogen economy. The projects' receipt of Project of Common Interest (PCI) status and the substantial EU support further underline their potential to enhance energy independence, security, and promote a clean energy transition. The decision signals a positive outlook for the development of hydrogen infrastructure and the creation of a competitive cross-border hydrogen market in the region.
