Germany is making significant strides in sustainable travel with the launch of the Mireo Plus H hydrogen trains by Siemens Mobility. These cutting-edge trains, part of a £45 million initiative, aim to replace diesel trains with clean, hydrogen-powered alternatives. Expected to begin passenger service in Berlin-Brandenburg and Bavaria from December 15, 2024, the Mireo Plus H trains promise to transform regional rail travel in Germany. By using locally produced hydrogen in their fuel cells, the trains significantly reduce CO2 emissions, with water vapor as the only by-product. The initiative in Berlin-Brandenburg alone will save 1.1 million liters of diesel annually and cut emissions by 3,000 tons. In Bavaria, the Mireo Plus H, also known as 'Freistaat Bayern,' will operate on selected routes with a top speed of 99mph and an operating range of 745 miles, providing an environmentally friendly option for regional railways. Siemens' commitment to sustainability extends beyond hydrogen trains, with the introduction of battery-powered Mireo Plus B trains and enhanced accessibility features to cater to passengers with reduced mobility. The Mireo Plus H trains boast advanced amenities like free WiFi, dynamic passenger information systems, and ample space for bicycles and strollers, emphasizing a blend of innovation, environmental consciousness, and passenger comfort.
