Germany's National Hydrogen Strategy: Advancing Innovation and Collaboration
Key Ideas
  • Three flagship initiatives in Germany, H2Giga, TransHyDE, and H2Mare, are contributing to the National Hydrogen Strategy to achieve a competitive and climate-neutral economy.
  • TransHyDE, focusing on hydrogen transport, involves assessing various transportation and storage technologies like pipelines, high-pressure containers, ammonia-bound, and LOHCs.
  • The initiative comprises eleven projects with over 100 partners and EUR 146 million in funding, aiming to provide insights on regulatory measures for a rapid hydrogen uptake by 2026.
  • The collaboration between science and industry ensures the practical applicability of results, fostering innovation and overcoming existing economic and technological barriers in the hydrogen sector.
Germany's National Hydrogen Strategy is being advanced through research projects under flagship initiatives like H2Giga, TransHyDE, and H2Mare. These initiatives aim to ensure a competitive and climate-neutral economy by addressing various aspects of hydrogen usage. TransHyDE, in particular, focuses on the transportation of green hydrogen, including its import to Germany from renewable energy-intensive countries and distribution within the country. The initiative involves evaluating different transportation and storage technologies, such as pipelines, high-pressure containers, ammonia-bound, and liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs). With eleven projects and more than 100 partners, TransHyDE has received EUR 146 million in funding from the Federal Ministry for Education and Research. Besides technological solutions, TransHyDE will provide insights into regulatory measures to facilitate the rapid adoption of hydrogen, with the completion of the measure expected by August 2026. The close collaboration between stakeholders from science and industry ensures the transferability and practicality of the research results, driving innovation and overcoming current economic and technological challenges in the hydrogen sector.
