HY4Link: Building a Hydrogen Transport Infrastructure Across Europe
Key Ideas
  • Creos Luxembourg, Fluxys hydrogen, and GRTgaz announce the HY4Link project to transport hydrogen across France, Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg, aiming to create a European network.
  • The project aligns with the Ten-Year Development Plan for the European Hydrogen Network and focuses on linking industries to hydrogen import hubs, encouraging local renewable hydrogen production.
  • HY4Link involves partnerships between countries like France and Luxembourg to develop a hydrogen infrastructure, with plans for expansion to connect with the H2Med corridor and regional storage projects.
  • The project is expected to drive the development of a regional hydrogen economy, providing access to competitive renewable hydrogen for industrial customers to accelerate their decarbonization efforts.
Creos Luxembourg, Fluxys hydrogen in Belgium, and GRTgaz in France have unveiled the HY4Link project to establish a hydrogen transport infrastructure across France, Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The project, a candidate for the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI), is part of the Ten-Year Development Plan for the European Hydrogen Network. It aims to assess consumption and transit needs in the Greater Region, connecting regions like Belgium, Luxembourg, the Grand Est region in France, and the Federal State of Saarland in Germany. The project's goal is to link industries to hydrogen import hubs like Antwerp, Zeebrugge, Rotterdam, and Dunkirk, promoting local renewable hydrogen production in the Greater Region by enhancing transport infrastructure. The collaboration between GRTgaz and Creos Luxembourg will explore a network linking France and Luxembourg, while another connection between Belgium and Luxembourg will be considered by Creos Luxembourg and Fluxys hydrogen. The project's second phase involves constructing a hydrogen pipeline across Luxembourg to France and Germany, along with a link to the H2Med corridor and a regional storage initiative. Sandrine Meunier, CEO of GRTgaz, highlighted that HY4Link will boost the regional hydrogen economy, providing industrial customers with competitive renewable hydrogen to support their decarbonization endeavors. The project emphasizes regional collaboration, infrastructure development, and energy transition in a bid to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source.
