Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ken Saito, and the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, reinforced their commitment to hydrogen development at a High-Level Hydrogen Business Forum in Tokyo. Their collaboration, stemming from a Memorandum of Cooperation on Hydrogen signed in December 2022, aims to advance decarbonisation efforts by fostering joint initiatives in renewable and low-carbon hydrogen technologies. Commissioner Simson highlighted the significance of international collaboration in promoting hydrogen as a globally traded commodity and emphasized the importance of EU-Japan cooperation to ensure standards and regulations align. Saito and Simson addressed concerns regarding economic dependencies on specific supply sources and agreed to cooperate on policies in clean energy sectors, particularly in wind, solar, and hydrogen. They also stressed the need to establish transparent and sustainable supply chains through partnerships with like-minded entities. The forum facilitated the signing of agreements between various organizations from Japan and the EU to promote business cooperation in the hydrogen sector. Moving forward, Japan and Europe will formulate a joint working plan to deepen collaboration, taking into account recent policy developments supporting hydrogen initiatives. The partnership signifies a positive step towards sustainable hydrogen development and reinforces the commitment of both regions to decarbonisation and clean energy transition.
