Power2X and Honeywell Collaboration: Advancing Sustainable Aviation Fuels in Europe
Key Ideas
  • Power2X partners with Honeywell to implement eFining technology for eFuels in Rotterdam, using green hydrogen and methanol created from green hydrogen to produce sustainable aviation fuel.
  • The collaboration aligns with European SAF mandates and energy transition goals, aiming to supply 40% of required eSAF volume by 2030 when the facility is operational.
  • Honeywell's advanced eFining technology enables efficient conversion of methanol into eFuels, contributing to decarbonizing the aviation sector and meeting ambitious fuel mandates.
  • The project highlights the importance of technological innovation in shaping the future of aviation and clean energy production, positioning Europe as a key player in sustainable fuel supply chains.
Power2X has partnered with Honeywell to integrate Honeywell UOP’s eFiningTM methanol-to-jet processing technology in Power2X’s eFuels Rotterdam project, based in the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The facility will leverage green hydrogen and methanol produced from green hydrogen and biogenic carbon to create electrofuels (efuels) for sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) and other ultra-low carbon fuels. This collaboration signifies a significant step towards producing non-fossil, synthetic fuels at an industrial scale, contributing to the energy transition and decarbonization efforts in Europe. The Power2X production plant will have the capacity to generate over 250,000 tons per year of eSAF, aiming to meet the increasing demand for sustainable aviation fuel in the region. Honeywell's eFining technology will be instrumental in converting methanol into eFuels with high efficiency and low emissions, supporting airlines in meeting stringent European fuel mandates. The initiative aligns with Europe's ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, which requires enhanced usage of SAF, including eSAF, from 2030 onwards. Honeywell's expertise in sustainable aviation fuel technologies, including eFining, EcofiningTM, FT UnicrackingTM, and Ethanol to Jet, demonstrates a commitment to developing next-generation fuels and advancing clean energy solutions globally. With a projected capacity of over 500,000 barrels of renewable fuel per day across licensed sites, Honeywell aims to play a key role in the transition towards sustainable aviation and energy production. The joint efforts of Power2X and Honeywell underscore the importance of innovation and collaboration in accelerating the adoption of green technologies and meeting environmental targets in the aviation sector.
