Qair Launches First Hydrogen Station in Béziers as Part of Territorial Ecosystem Initiative
Key Ideas
  • Qair, in collaboration with AREC, is launching its first hydrogen station in Béziers' Méridienne Business Park, with an operational target by the end of 2025.
  • The station will distribute up to 600 kilograms of hydrogen daily, primarily catering to the bus fleet of the Béziers Méditerranée urban community.
  • The project is part of a larger initiative involving the Hyd’Occ renewable hydrogen production unit in Port-La Nouvelle, set to supply multiple stations across the Occitanie region.
  • Supported by various entities including the European Investment Bank, the initiative aims to establish a zero-emission transport corridor for heavy-duty mobility, connecting the Iberian Peninsula with northern Europe.
Independent energy company Qair, in partnership with the Regional Energy and Climate Agency (AREC) Occitanie, is set to launch its first hydrogen station in the Méridienne Business Park in Béziers. Expected to be operational by the end of 2025, this station is part of a broader initiative to create a territorial ecosystem centered around renewable hydrogen. It will have the capacity to distribute up to 600 kilograms of hydrogen daily, mainly targeting the bus fleet of the Béziers Méditerranée urban community. The hydrogen for this station will be supplied by Hyd’Occ, a renewable hydrogen production unit in Port-La Nouvelle, which will initially produce 2,700 tonnes of hydrogen per year. This production will later double to 5,400 tonnes annually with an expanded capacity of 40 megawatts. The establishment of this hydrogen station is supported by the European Investment Bank, the European Union via the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), and the French Agency for Ecological Transition (ADEME) as part of the 'Corridor H2 Occitanie' program. This program aims to create a zero-emission transport route for heavy-duty mobility, connecting the Iberian Peninsula with northern Europe. The Béziers station project is one of the initiatives selected under ADEME's 'Territorial Hydrogen Ecosystems' call for proposals. In addition to infrastructure development, Qair is organizing workshops in collaboration with Territoires Alternatifs to engage local stakeholders in hydrogen-based solutions. The project signifies progress in advancing hydrogen solutions for mobility and industry, as mentioned by Guirec Dufour, the Managing Director of Qair France. Stéphane Péré, the Managing Director of AREC, highlighted that the station is part of the Green Hydrogen Regional Plan, contributing to the strategy of establishing Occitanie as a positive-energy region.
