TotalEnergies and RWE Collaborate to Produce Green Hydrogen in the Netherlands
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies acquires 50% stake in the OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Netherlands to power 350 MW electrolyzer projects for green hydrogen production.
  • The project aims to decarbonize TotalEnergies' refineries in Northern Europe, reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 5 million tons per year by 2030.
  • OranjeWind project includes innovative features like electric boilers and battery storage to support grid stability, with construction set to commence in 2026 and full commissioning by early 2028.
  • Collaboration between TotalEnergies and RWE signifies a strategic partnership to drive green energy production and system integration in the Dutch energy market, contributing to decarbonization goals.
TotalEnergies has signed agreements with German renewable developer RWE to acquire a 50% stake in the OranjeWind offshore wind farm, a 795 MW project under development in the Netherlands. The company plans to use its share of the renewable electricity production from this wind farm to power 350 MW electrolyzer projects, which will produce approximately 40,000 tons per year of green hydrogen. This green hydrogen will be dedicated to decarbonizing TotalEnergies' refineries in Northern Europe, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by around 5 million tons per year by 2030. The OranjeWind project is considered a significant milestone in TotalEnergies' strategy to cut greenhouse gas emissions. By utilizing green hydrogen produced through electrolysis, the project is expected to avoid around 400,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year. Additionally, the offshore wind farm will provide benefits beyond hydrogen production, including support for the Dutch grid's stability through electric boilers and battery storage. Construction of the OranjeWind wind farm is scheduled to begin in 2026, with full commissioning anticipated in early 2028. The collaboration between TotalEnergies and RWE highlights the companies' shared commitment to the energy transition and decarbonization efforts in the European market. Through this partnership, both companies aim to drive innovation in offshore wind power and green hydrogen electrolysis, setting a blueprint for the future of the Dutch energy system.
