TotalEnergies Eyes Green Hydrogen from Brazil for European Refineries
Key Ideas
- TotalEnergies considers importing green hydrogen from Brazil to supply European refineries.
- The project in Brazil could have a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts of electrolysis for hydrogen production.
- TotalEnergies aims to replace gray hydrogen with green hydrogen in its European refining processes by 2030.
- The switch to green hydrogen is driven by EU regulations promoting cleaner energy sources.
TotalEnergies SE is exploring the possibility of importing green hydrogen from a major project in northeastern Brazil to fuel its European refineries. The company is in discussions with Brazilian renewables developer Casa dos Ventos, which is planning a significant plant for hydrogen production. The project, set to be developed at the port of Pecem, could have a substantial capacity for electrolysis, aiming to produce 160,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, along with 900,000 tons of green ammonia. Green hydrogen, produced through water splitting with renewable energy, is seen as a crucial element for a sustainable future. TotalEnergies intends to transition from gray hydrogen, created from fossil fuels, to green hydrogen to align with EU emission standards by 2030. This move is part of the company's strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and comply with upcoming environmental regulations. By signing contracts for significant amounts of green hydrogen production in Europe and import from Saudi Arabia, TotalEnergies is positioning itself as a key player in the shift towards cleaner energy sources.
