Turn2X Completes Groundbreaking Cross-Border Delivery of Green Hydrogen-Based Renewable Natural Gas in Europe
Key Ideas
  • Turn2X achieves Europe's first cross-border delivery of green hydrogen-based RNG, demonstrating innovation in sustainable energy transportation.
  • The RNG, produced in Spain using green hydrogen and biogenic CO₂, is transported to a German glassmaker through the EU gas grid.
  • The mass balance system enables tracking and trading of renewable and low-carbon gases, allowing for claims of RNG usage despite physical mixing with fossil gas.
  • The success of this project marks a significant milestone in advancing the adoption of renewable natural gas in Europe's energy landscape.
German start-up Turn2X has made history by completing Europe’s first cross-border delivery of green hydrogen-based renewable natural gas (RNG). The RNG, produced in Spain at Turn2X's Miajadas plant using green hydrogen and biogenic CO₂, was transported via the EU gas grid to a glassmaker in Germany. Through the mass balance system, Turn2X was able to inject the RNG into the existing natural gas grid and deliver it to the customer, Noelle + von Campe. Despite the physical mixing with fossil gas post-injection, the volumes matched and were certified, allowing for the claim of using RNG. This mechanism resembles a renewable power PPA, where financial support is provided for renewable energy production even when blended into shared infrastructure. Turn2X highlighted this achievement as the 'first-ever mass-balanced transport of RNG across Europe.' The success of this project not only showcases the advancement in sustainable energy transportation but also paves the way for increased adoption of renewable natural gas in Europe's energy sector.
