AM Green and John Cockerill's Strategic Partnership for Green Ammonia Production in India
Key Ideas
  • AM Green and John Cockerill have finalized an investment decision for a one-million-ton green ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, contributing to India's green hydrogen production targets.
  • The project includes the development of India's largest electrolyzer manufacturing plant, furthering the country's goal to establish a green hydrogen ecosystem and support the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
  • The partnership aims to accelerate the production of green ammonia, with the plant's output equivalent to a significant portion of India's green hydrogen targets and Europe's green hydrogen imports target.
  • John Cockerill's advanced electrolysis technology, combined with renewable energy solutions, will play a crucial role in the mass adoption of green hydrogen and its derivatives in India and beyond.
AM Green and John Cockerill have come together in a strategic partnership to embark on a significant green ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, India. The project, with a capacity of one million tons, is set to commence operations in the second half of 2026. This initiative involves the installation of 1.3 GW of advanced pressurized alkaline electrolyzers in two phases to produce green hydrogen and subsequently convert it into green ammonia. The collaboration between AM Green and John Cockerill also entails the establishment of India's largest electrolyzer manufacturing plant, with an annual capacity of 2 GW, in Kakinada. This infrastructure development aligns with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to boost green hydrogen production in the country. The Kakinada facility has garnered certification from CertifHy, meeting EU RFNBO requirements for green ammonia production. AM Green has already secured offtake agreements for the project, signaling a promising future for green hydrogen applications. Anil Chalamalasetty, Group Chairman of AM Green, expressed optimism about the partnership and highlighted its role in advancing India's green hydrogen objectives while contributing to global decarbonization efforts. Similarly, François Michel, CEO of John Cockerill, emphasized the significance of the order in their hydrogen business expansion and commitment to sustainable technological solutions. The joint venture, Rely, between John Cockerill and Technip Energies, will provide essential services for the entire facility, further solidifying the companies' commitment to green energy initiatives. With public support from various countries, including India, the USA, Belgium, and France, John Cockerill aims to establish local green hydrogen ecosystems and drive the adoption of renewable energy solutions.
