Key Ideas
- NTPC Green Energy Limited signed an MoU with Bharat Light and Power to strengthen green energy initiatives, focusing on green hydrogen and carbon capture.
- The agreement aims to explore off-take of green hydrogen by third parties, contribute to India's net-zero goals, and establish infrastructure for the green hydrogen project.
- NGEL has a substantial renewable energy portfolio in India, emphasizing solar and wind energy projects with plans to reduce debt using IPO proceeds.
- Despite challenges in land transfers for wind projects and a high debt burden, NGEL's strategic focus includes expansion into green hydrogen, green chemicals, and battery energy storage.
NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Light and Power Private Limited (BLP) to enhance green energy initiatives, with a specific focus on green hydrogen and carbon capture. The agreement, signed in New Delhi on February 19, 2025, aims to explore the off-take of green hydrogen and derivatives by third parties. NGEL also plans to sell captured carbon and biogenic carbon to support India's net-zero goals. The company, known for its renewable energy projects, will build essential infrastructure for the green hydrogen project.
NGEL, a subsidiary of NTPC Limited established in April 2022, has a significant renewable energy capacity of 26,071 MW, with a substantial portion already operational. The company is actively engaged in solar and wind energy projects, securing long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to ensure stable revenue streams. Rajasthan is a key contributor to NGEL's operational capacity.
Despite challenges like delays in land transfers for wind projects and a high debt burden of Rs 17,057 crore, NGEL is looking to utilize Rs 7,000 crore from IPO proceeds to reduce its debts. The company is strategically expanding into green hydrogen, green chemicals, and battery energy storage while maintaining its focus on renewable energy. Solar energy constitutes 91% of NGEL's revenue, with plans in place to scale up the renewable energy footprint and emphasize sustainable energy solutions for the future.
