EET's Stanlow Refinery Transformation: Pioneering Low-Carbon Hydrogen Production in the UK
Key Ideas
  • EET Hydrogen Power, Europe's first hydrogen-ready CHP plant, will be constructed at Stanlow refinery by 2027 to support low-carbon ambitions.
  • EET Fuel aims to become the lowest carbon process refinery globally, while EET Hydrogen seeks to be the leading low-carbon hydrogen producer in the UK.
  • The new plant will offer 125 MW of power and 6,000 tonnes per day of steam, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 740,000 tonnes annually.
  • Stanlow's existing boiler units generating 50MW will be replaced, aiming to cut total emissions by 95% by 2030, making it the world's lowest carbon refinery.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) has unveiled plans for the development of EET Hydrogen Power, Europe’s first hydrogen-ready Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant at its Stanlow refinery in the UK. The project is set to be completed by 2027 and aims to support EET Fuels in becoming the lowest carbon process refinery globally, while also positioning EET Hydrogen as the leading low-carbon hydrogen producer in the UK. The plant will operate as an independent vertical under EET and will go through two phases to achieve a capacity of 125 MW of power and 6,000 tonnes per day of steam. By using hydrogen instead of hydrocarbons, the plant will contribute to a reduction of 740,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Furthermore, the new facility will replace the current boiler units at Stanlow, which generate around 50MW of power, and play a crucial role in the decarbonisation strategy of EET Fuels. The refinery aims to slash its total emissions by 95% by 2030, positioning it as the world's lowest carbon refinery.
