The Ministry of Power in India is actively working towards strengthening the country's energy security and transitioning towards cleaner energy sources. In a recent meeting chaired by the Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, the focus was on developing a roadmap for nuclear power generation. With a commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2070, India sees nuclear energy as a crucial element in its sustainable development journey. Currently operating 25 nuclear reactors with plans for more in the pipeline, India aims to reach 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047. To achieve this target, strategic initiatives such as policy amendments, regulatory streamlining, and technology diversification are being implemented. These measures also include enhancing public perception about nuclear energy and ensuring competitive nuclear tariffs. The meeting highlighted the potential of nuclear energy beyond electricity generation, including applications like hydrogen production and desalination. Members of Parliament actively participated, providing suggestions to expedite project execution and emphasize technology diversification. The Ministry of Power, in collaboration with various stakeholders, is committed to accelerating the deployment of nuclear power projects to secure a clean, secure, and sustainable energy future for India.
