European Union Funds 100 Hydrogen-Powered Trucks at Mercedes-Benz Plant in Wörth
Key Ideas
  • The European Union's IPCEI Hydrogen program funds 100 fuel cell trucks at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Wörth, aiming for operation by the end of 2026.
  • Liquid hydrogen technology enables a range of over 1,000 kilometers, promoting sustainability and efficiency in long-distance transport.
  • Daimler Truck's dual-track strategy includes hydrogen-powered trucks and battery-electric vehicles to achieve CO2-neutral driving by 2039.
  • The funding supports not only the vehicle development but also investments in the hydrogen value chain and production facilities for sustainable freight transport.
The European Union is financing the development and production of 100 hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Wörth. The project received 226 million euros in funding from the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, as well as the federal states of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. This initiative is part of the IPCEI Hydrogen program, aimed at promoting hydrogen technology in road freight transportation. Liquid hydrogen technology is highlighted for its energy density, enabling a range of over 1,000 kilometers and comparable performance to diesel trucks. Daimler Truck's commitment to CO2-neutral driving by 2039 includes a dual-track strategy with both hydrogen and battery-powered vehicles. The funding covers not only the truck development but also feasibility studies and investments in the hydrogen value chain and production facilities. This project showcases the advancement of sustainable transport solutions in the commercial vehicle industry.
