Himachal Pradesh Launches Green Hydrogen Plant for Sustainable Energy Future
Key Ideas
  • Himachal Pradesh's CM laid the foundation stone for a 1 MW green hydrogen plant at Dabhota, emphasizing the state's commitment to renewable energy and sustainability.
  • The project, a collaboration between HPPCL and Oil India Limited, aims to establish Himachal Pradesh as a leader in green energy by producing 423 kg of green hydrogen per day.
  • The green hydrogen plant will use renewable sources for electrolysis, a method that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and supports cleaner energy practices.
  • The plant, costing Rs 9.04 crore, is part of the state's broader focus on sustainable energy solutions and targets like achieving 500 MW of solar energy production.
The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, inaugurated the foundation stone laying ceremony for a 1 MW green hydrogen plant at Dabhota, located in the Nalagarh Tehsil of Solan district. This pioneering project, a collaboration between Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) and Oil India Limited, aims to establish the state as a frontrunner in renewable energy and sustainability. With a production capacity of 423 kg of green hydrogen per day, the plant will utilize underground water reserves sourced via tube wells. The electrolysis process of green hydrogen production will require approximately 52.01 units of electricity per kg of hydrogen, aiming to produce 1,54,395 kg of green hydrogen annually. The project, set to be established at a cost of Rs 9.04 crore, is a significant milestone for Himachal Pradesh's renewable energy journey, affirming the state's commitment to becoming India's first green energy state by March 2026. By signing a memorandum of understanding with Oil India Limited in 2023, the state government has shown its focus on various sustainable energy solutions, including solar energy, green hydrogen, geothermal energy, and compressed biogas. The selection of a 4,000-square-metre land parcel for the green hydrogen plant reflects the government's strategic planning for large-scale green energy initiatives. The plant's production process using renewable sources for electrolysis and an alkaline potassium hydroxide solution as an electrolyte underscores the commitment to environmentally friendly energy practices. Through this project, Himachal Pradesh aims to not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also contribute to a cleaner energy ecosystem. The broader vision of the state government includes targets such as achieving 500 MW of solar energy production, showcasing a holistic approach towards sustainable energy solutions.
