Key Ideas
- The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in India has increased the allocation for Green Ammonia production in the fertilizer sector under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
- The aim of the mission is to achieve self-reliance through clean energy and to lead the global Clean Energy Transition.
- The capacity for Green Ammonia production has been raised from 5.5 lakh tonnes per annum to 7.5 lakh tonnes per annum to meet the growing demand from various sectors.
- The initiative is expected to significantly contribute to decarbonization, reduce fossil fuel imports, and position India as a leader in Green Hydrogen technology and market.
The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) in India has announced an enhancement in the share of allocation for the Fertilizer Sector under the SIGHT Programme of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The allocation for Green Ammonia production has been increased from 5.5 lakh tonnes per annum to 7.5 lakh tonnes per annum in response to the rising demand. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in January last year with a substantial budget, aims to make India self-reliant through clean energy and serve as a role model for global clean energy transition. The mission focuses on strategic interventions for green hydrogen transition, involving financial incentives for domestic electrolyser manufacturing and green hydrogen production. The Solar Energy Corporation of India has initiated a competitive bidding process for the selection of Green Ammonia Producers. The increased demand for Green Hydrogen and its derivatives after the implementation of the mission indicates a positive trend in sustainable energy practices. The National Green Hydrogen Mission is expected to drive significant decarbonization, reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports, and position India as a technology and market leader in the Green Hydrogen sector.
