India Launches Green Hydrogen Incentive Scheme for Transition to Clean Energy
Key Ideas
  • The MNRE has notified the Scheme Guidelines for the SIGHT Programme Component II, Incentive Scheme for Green Hydrogen Production.
  • Tranche-II will have a capacity of 450,000 TPA of Green Hydrogen, with 40,000 TPA reserved for biomass-based pathways.
  • SECI will be the implementing agency, and the bidding process will be based on the least average incentive quoted by the bidder.
  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to contribute to India's self-reliance through clean energy, decarbonize the economy, reduce fossil fuel dependence, and establish leadership in Green Hydrogen.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in India has released the Scheme Guidelines for the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme Component II. This scheme, known as Incentive Scheme for Green Hydrogen Production, focuses on accelerating the adoption of Green Hydrogen in the country. Tranche-II of the program will have a total capacity of 450,000 Metric Tonnes Per Annum (TPA) of Green Hydrogen. Within this capacity, 40,000 TPA is earmarked for biomass-based pathways while the remaining capacity will be for technology-agnostic pathways. The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) is responsible for the implementation of this tranche as well. The bidding process for this scheme will involve quoting the least average incentive, with varying minimum and maximum bid capacities for different pathways. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, which was inaugurated on January 4, 2023, with a significant allocation of Rs. 19,744 crores up to the fiscal year 2029-30, aims to enhance India's self-reliance in clean energy. Additionally, the mission is designed to facilitate the decarbonization of the economy, reduce the nation's reliance on fossil fuel imports, and position India as a global leader in Green Hydrogen technology and market development.
