Indian Government Encourages Sugar Industry Diversification into Green Hydrogen and Ethanol-Diesel
Key Ideas
- Transport Minister Gadkari urges sugar industry to diversify into ethanol-diesel blending and green hydrogen production to enhance viability and profitability.
- Initiatives include promoting flex engines, bioCNG, and exploring export opportunities for ethanol to neighboring countries.
- Government to consider industry requests for sugar exports and minimum selling price to support farmers and consumers.
- Focus on modern techniques like nano-fertilizers and drone spraying to increase sugarcane productivity and industry profitability.
The Indian Road, Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari, has encouraged the sugar industry to explore diversification opportunities, including ethanol-diesel blending and green hydrogen production. Speaking at the annual general meeting of the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), the minister highlighted the potential for alternative fuels such as flex engines, ethanol-based engines, and bioCNG in the transport sector. He mentioned that leading automakers like Tatas, Suzuki, and Toyota are planning to launch flex engine cars, while also urging tractor manufacturers to consider producing tractors running on alternative fuels. The minister emphasized the need for establishing ethanol and CNG pumps, including through private sector participation, as well as exploring export avenues for ethanol to neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Additionally, he pointed out the potential for bio-bitumen production and green hydrogen generation from sugar industry resources. Gadkari stressed the importance of green hydrogen as an alternative fuel source, suggesting the utilization of existing sugar and ethanol industry infrastructure for its production. He assured the industry of government support, including considering requests for sugar exports and setting a minimum selling price to benefit farmers and consumers. The focus is on enhancing sugarcane productivity through modern techniques like nano-fertilizers and drone spraying to increase industry profitability while safeguarding interests.
