The Alkali Manufacturers Association of India (AMAI) recently released its Annual Industry Review 2023-24, highlighting significant growth in India's Caustic Soda and Soda Ash demand. The report reveals that Caustic Soda demand surged by 5.3% to reach 43.6 lakh MT, leading India to shift from being an importer to a net exporter over the past four years. Similarly, Soda Ash demand saw a rise of over 4%, touching 41.4 lakh MT in the same fiscal year. The publication provides a comprehensive overview of India's Alkali and Chloro-Vinyl industries, detailing capacities, production, demand, supply, and trade data for key products like Caustic Soda, Soda Ash, Sodium Bicarbonate, PVC, and CPVC. Notably, PVC imports reached a record high of over 26 lakh MT, representing a substantial portion of India's total demand. The report also sheds light on the production and demand trends for Chlorine and Hydrogen, the major co-products of caustic soda manufacture. In FY 2023-24, Chlorine demand stood at 40.87 lakh MTPA, registering a 3.1% increase from the previous year. Concurrently, Hydrogen production grew by 3.1% to 12,915 lakh Nm³. AMAI's snapshot of the industry for FY 2023-24 reveals that Caustic Soda's installed capacity reached 57.85 lakh MTPA, reflecting 5.5% of the global capacity. Production increased to 46.13 lakh MT, with a substantial capacity utilization of 82%. Meanwhile, Soda Ash's installed capacity stood at 43.96 lakh MT, expected to align with the country's GDP growth. The report underscores the importance of various industry segments driving demand, such as textiles for Caustic Soda, CPW, and Chloro-Methanes for Chlorine, soaps & detergents and glass for Soda Ash, and pipes & fittings for PVC. Overall, the industry review portrays a positive outlook for India's alkali sector, with growth in production, demand, and capacity utilization across key products.
