As global energy supply chains face strain due to recent black swan events like the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, India is reevaluating its energy strategies. Amidst the energy shortages and national security challenges witnessed by countries like Sri Lanka, India is intensifying its efforts to transition towards hydrogen as a fuel source. The country plans to invest $2.5 billion in hydrogen to meet its 2070 net-zero targets and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. There is a policy push to incorporate hydrogen in oil refineries and fertiliser production, with targets set for the percentage of fuel usage to be replaced by green hydrogen. Despite concerns about the feasibility of hydrogen production keeping up with demand, India remains confident in its transition. Automobile giants Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors are actively involved in the initiative, aiming to introduce hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles within the next five years. Additionally, Tata Motors has signed an MoU with Cummins to develop hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles, reflecting India's commitment to sustainable mobility and green energy. The country's move towards hydrogen signifies its ambition to lead in the realm of renewable energy and contribute towards global environmental goals.
