India's Bold Step Towards Green Hydrogen Revolution
Key Ideas
  • The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India has announced the Scheme Guidelines for the SIGHT Programme to boost green hydrogen production.
  • The initiative targets to increase India's green hydrogen capacity to 450,000 tonnes per annum, with a focus on biomass-based and technology-agnostic pathways.
  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission, backed by substantial funding, aims to enhance self-reliance in clean energy, reduce carbon emissions, and position India as a global leader in green hydrogen technology.
  • SECI will oversee the bidding process, with minimum and maximum capacities set for both biomass-based and technology-agnostic pathways to ensure competitive participation.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India has taken a significant step by introducing the Scheme Guidelines for the second tranche of the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme. This initiative, known as Component II: Incentive Scheme for Green Hydrogen Production, targets an impressive expansion of India's green hydrogen production capacity to 450,000 tonnes per annum. The scheme allocates 40,000 TPA for biomass-based pathways and the remaining capacity to technology-agnostic pathways. The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) will manage the implementation, with plans to issue the Request for Selection (RfS) soon. The bidding process will be competitive based on the least average incentive quoted by bidders, with set capacities ranging from 500 TPA to 90,000 TPA for biomass-based pathways and 10,000 TPA to 90,000 TPA for technology-agnostic pathways. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched earlier with significant funding, aims to enhance India's self-reliance in clean energy, reduce the carbon footprint, diminish reliance on fossil fuel imports, and position the country as a global leader in green hydrogen technology and markets.
