Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, reiterated India's commitment to sustainable energy at the FT Live Energy Transition Summit. Puri emphasized the country's progression towards green energy, particularly highlighting the importance of green hydrogen, electric vehicles (EVs), and expanding refining capacity. He stated that India is well-positioned for the green energy transition and aims to reduce its dependence on crude oil imports while increasing its renewable energy capacity.
Puri also focused on the rise of green hydrogen, expressing confidence in its potential as the 'fuel of the future.' He mentioned the increasing presence of electrolyser manufacturers in India, signaling a growth in localized green hydrogen production. Additionally, he praised India's efforts in ethanol blending and the rapid growth of the domestic EV sector.
The minister highlighted the government's target of achieving 20% ethanol blending by 2025 and increasing the natural gas mix in the energy sector from 8% to 15%. Puri also discussed the optimistic outlook on decreasing costs of renewable energy, specifically mentioning the reduction in solar energy costs from 25 cents to 3 cents.
India's energy transition efforts align with global trends towards cleaner energy sources. Puri reassured that India's refining sector will remain strong, with plans to become one of the leading global refining hubs while emphasizing the importance of green hydrogen and EVs in the country's energy future.
