India's First Green Hydrogen Plant Inaugurated in Madhya Pradesh
Key Ideas
  • The State-owned GAIL inaugurated India's first green hydrogen plant in Madhya Pradesh, aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
  • The plant can produce 4.3 TPD of hydrogen through 10MW PEM Electrolyzer units, aiming to achieve high purity and pressure in the produced hydrogen.
  • Initially, the hydrogen will be used as a fuel alongside natural gas for captive purposes and later be dispensed to retail customers in nearby areas.
  • The establishment of electrolyzer manufacturing capacity of 1,500 MW per annum will further enhance India's capability to produce green hydrogen at scale.
The Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) has inaugurated India's first green hydrogen plant in Madhya Pradesh, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy production. The plant, inaugurated by the Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas and GAIL's Chairman and Managing Director, implements an alternative energy source in alignment with the National Green Hydrogen Mission. This mission, a key initiative of the Indian government, aims to promote the development and adoption of green hydrogen technologies in the country. The plant utilizes 10MW PEM Electrolyzer units to produce 4.3 TPD of hydrogen through water electrolysis using renewable power, ensuring high purity (99.999%) and production under pressure. Initially, the produced hydrogen will be utilized as fuel in conjunction with natural gas for internal processes at the existing plant, with plans to distribute green gas to retail customers locally and transport it through high-pressure cascades. Additionally, GAIL plans to set up 20MW of solar power plants to support the electrolyzer's power requirement. Furthermore, the awarding of tenders for a 1,500 MW per annum electrolyzer manufacturing capacity will strengthen India's position in large-scale green hydrogen production.
