Indian Railways is set to launch India's first hydrogen-powered train in December 2024, marking a significant step towards sustainable transportation. The trial run for this eco-friendly train will initially take place on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, with plans for full operation by March 2025. The design for the hydrogen train, developed by the Research, Design, and Standard Organisation, is complete, and trials are imminent after necessary approvals. With a speed of 110 kmph, the train will consist of 10 coaches, including two hydrogen-powered engine coaches and eight passenger coaches, with zero emissions and reduced noise levels. The train, capable of carrying 2,638 passengers, will be fueled by 400 kg of hydrogen, allowing it to travel four trips of 375 kilometres between Sonipat and Jind. This initiative aligns with India's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and places the country among the select few nations utilizing hydrogen fuel for trains.
